Press Release From the Agriculture Department, Namchi Information & Public Relations Department

Namchi, March 9: A Farmer–Scientist Interaction Programme on the theme “Climate-Resilient Agriculture and Crop Diversification” was organised by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) under the Agriculture Department, Namchi District. The event was held at the Conference Hall of the District Administrative Centre in Namchi with participation from farmers, agricultural officials and experts.

The programme began with a welcome address by Wangyal Lepcha, Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department, who highlighted the growing need for climate-resilient farming practices in the face of changing weather patterns. He stressed the importance of strengthening collaboration between farmers and scientific experts to improve agricultural productivity and ensure stable incomes for farming communities.

During the technical session, Yona Pradhan, Agriculture Development Officer (ADO) of Sumbuk and an entomologist, delivered a presentation on climate change and emerging pest and disease management. He explained how changing climatic conditions influence pest populations and emphasised the adoption of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and eco-friendly approaches to control infestations.

Prakash Tiwari, Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department, spoke on crop diversification and high-value horticultural crops, encouraging farmers to diversify cropping systems to increase income and strengthen livelihood security. Meanwhile, Dr. Chandini Chettri, Veterinary Officer, highlighted the benefits of integrated farming systems, explaining how combining crop and livestock production can improve farm sustainability, nutrient recycling and income stability.

Dr. Nation Chamling, Deputy Project Director of ATMA Namchi, also addressed the gathering and informed farmers about various government schemes and programmes designed to enhance productivity and farm income.

The programme concluded with an interactive session where farmers discussed field-level challenges and received expert guidance. Nikam Tamang, ADO Namchi, delivered the vote of thanks, while the event was coordinated by Pintso Bhutia, ATM, who served as the master of ceremonies.
